These Family Home Features Are Worth Paying More For

Real Estate Blog

When shopping for family homes, you will have a lot of decisions to make. You'll have to decide which features to pay more for, and which you're willing to do without in order to save on costs. While ultimately this is a personal decision, there are some features that are almost always worth paying more for when you have a family. Here are four of them.

A Fireplace

A fireplace will give you a cozy place to gather as a family. You can read books in front of the fire, snuggling up on a chilly winter evening. The fireplace gives you an alternative to the television and encourages more interactions between family members. When you host parties, a fireplace provides a nice focal point for the celebration. Plus, burning wood in the fireplace helps warm your home and decrease your heating bills, so you may eventually make up for the extra cost of a home with a fireplace.

A Breakfast Bar

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially when you have kids. They are going to gather in the kitchen when you prepare dinner and breakfast. If you have a breakfast bar, they will have a convenient place to sit as you serve them meals or cook for them. Without a breakfast bar, they're more likely to get in your way, making it less efficient to cook in your kitchen. A breakfast bar is also a convenient spot to eat dinner as a family when you don't feel like setting and cleaning up the dining room table.

A Master Bathroom

Look for a master bedroom with an attached bath. It may sound like an extravagance, but you can reserve it for yourself and your partner, having your kids use a different bathroom. Not having to trip over kids' toys and juggle kids shampoo in the shower makes your self-care routines so much more enjoyable.

Hardwood Floors

Carpeting can be a real hassle when you have kids. Although it is comfortable underfoot, it gets stained so easily when your children spill something or forget to take off their shoes after playing in the mud. Hardwood floors may be more expensive, but they're a lot easier to keep clean, and you won't have to pay to have them professionally shampooed as you would a carpet. Linoleum and tile floors also work well and are easy to keep clean with kids.
