4 Things To Check When Inspecting The Plumbing System In A Home You Want To Buy

Real Estate Blog

If you are buying a house, you have the right to hire a home inspector to examine the house before you close on the deal; however, some people choose not to do this. If you are capable of inspecting the house yourself, you might decide to forego the inspection and do it yourself. This is a good option if you are qualified to do this, and here are some of the top things you should inspect that relates to the plumbing system in the home.

The condition of the fixtures

The first thing to do when inspecting the plumbing system is to take a good look at each plumbing fixture, including the sinks, toilets, and tubs. As you look, simply take note of the condition of each. Do they look new, or are they really old? Do you see stains in them, or do they seem really clean?

The water pressure coming from the fixtures

Secondly, you will need to test the water pressure from each of the faucets, and you should do this for every faucet in the home. Testing the water pressure simply involves turning a faucet on. As it's running, turn on a second faucet. When two faucets are running at the same time, you will get a good idea as to how good the water pressure is in the home.

The way the fixtures drain water

As you are watching the water pressure in each fixture, you should also take note of the way the drains work. Do the drains quickly drain the water that comes into them, or do you notice that the water is going down very slowly in one or more of the drains? If water is going down slowly, it can often indicate a problem inside the pipes, such as a clogged pipe.

Signs of moisture and leaks in the walls and ceilings

Finally, you should look around the house at the walls and ceilings to see if you see any signs of water leaks or moisture. These are not always easy to find, especially if the owner of the house just repainted the walls, but it is something you should look for.

Inspecting a house yourself is not a bad idea if you know what to look for. If you do not know what to look for, ask your real estate agent to help you choose a good home inspector to hire. Contact an agency, like Howard Hanna Real Estate Services - Arlene Smith, for more help.
