If you have chosen to look for a pet-friendly apartment to rent so you can bring your pet along with you, there will be some differences you should know about when renting a unit like this. A pet-friendly apartment complex might welcome your animal, but there will also be some responsibilities you will have when living there, and here are some of them.
You must have proof of license, vaccines, and anything else needed
A lot of landlords that allow pets will allow them as long as the pets meet certain guidelines and as long as the owners have certain types of documentation for the pets. For example, you may need to show a license for the pet you have, if it is a type of pet that requires having a license. You might also need to show the landlord documentation that proves that your pet is fully vaccinated. Providing documentation for these things is often a necessity, as landlords should be sure to do all they can to reduce risks of injuries and problems with the pets and tenants that live in their units.
You must keep your pet under control at all times
Secondly, as the owner of a pet, you will have the responsibility of keeping your pet under control at all times. This could mean that you must make sure you put the pet in a cage if necessary when you leave your house. If you have a pet snake, for example, this snake could somehow leave your apartment while you are gone if it is not locked up. This could not only pose risks to other tenants, but it could be a very scary and traumatic experience for someone to encounter a snake in the building.
Keeping your pet under control also means that you must keep it quiet so that you do not disturb other tenants, and this is especially important if you have a dog who likes to bark.
You must clean up after your pet and keep it on a leash
The other responsibility you will likely have is that you will need to keep the pet on a leash if you take it outside, and you will be required to take it to designated areas outdoors. Additionally, you may be required to clean up after the pet when you take it outside to use the bathroom.
